What is profile.json in Dreamlight Valley?

Understand the role of a Dreamlight Valley profile file, why file names alone are not enough and why manual JSON edits can be risky.

Structured data, not a shopping list

A profile file stores structured information used by the game to reconstruct a player’s state. In compatible workflows, profile.json is the player-data file opened by the editor. It is not the game executable, a mod installer or a replacement for the whole save system.

Names and storage formats differ across platforms. A file being named profile.json does not prove it is current, compatible or associated with the player you intend to edit. Check its origin and keep the surrounding save data intact.

Valid JSON does not necessarily mean a valid save

JSON has a readable structure, but game records can depend on IDs, ownership, counters and other records elsewhere in the save. A text editor may produce syntactically valid JSON while leaving those relationships inconsistent. Guessing quest flags or copying blocks from someone else’s profile is not a safe shortcut.

Starlight Studio presents supported changes through dedicated tools and stages changes before saving. Its checks and protected-content handling reduce avoidable mistakes; they do not promise that arbitrary manual changes are safe.

Treat your profile as private data

A save can contain persistent player identifiers and details about your progress. Do not post the whole file in a public forum just to ask a question. Share the minimum needed, such as your platform and a non-sensitive error message.

For an order that requires a save, use the account’s protected upload process. Preserve your untouched original, and never mix files from different players or platforms simply because their names match.
